When John Kennedy was elected he challenged young Americans to step up and serve America. At that time, many senior government managers who had joined the Civil Service after serving in WWII, were getting ready to retire and the most likely replacements were from that same generation. Thus, special exams were held to hire the best and the brightest. I well remember because I sat amid a mass of young college grads and competed for what amounted to management internships. Surprising to many, I succeeded and joined Social Security at their headquarters office in Woodlawn Maryland near my home. After two and a half years I gladly enlisted in the Army to get away from the place. Yes, the Army is a lot like that other bureaucracy except in one key regard: Mission Orientation. We may do things in strange ways but we always had a mission to accomplish. Rules were rules but breaking them could be forgiven if you accomplished the mission. In a bureaucracy like Social Security, there is no much imperative. You follow the rules and if nothing is accomplished, there is no harm, no foul. I began drinking. The Army brought me back to reality.

I was relieved to learn that the F is PMF stands for Fellowship COL Mikel J. Burroughs.
Thanks for making us aware of the highly competitive Presidential Management Fellowship and letting us know that SSG Craig Calhoun is a POC.
Hopefully this program will draw many very capable people.
