“The point is not that Mattis is unqualified. Rather, the point is that he hates this shit,” Simpson writes. “Budgets, white papers, and service rivalries, not to mention the interagency meetings and White House meddling — these tasks are not what you go to Jim Mattis for."

This is why he IS the perfect candidate. I would love a Sec of Defense to run the Pentagon like a Marine Division! Not some political patsy like the last 8 years, where we spend more time talking about who gets to use what bathroom than why a budget fighter program is a turd, late, and has cost overruns that should have people fired. He is the perfect person to unfuck our military after 8 years of micro managing by someone who knows nothing about the military. You remember the guy that pledged to bring the troops home? We have been in conflict the entire time time Obama has been President.

I want a guy to run through DoD lopping of the heads of those incompetent, yes men generals and put some fucking war fighters back in charge. I want somebody in charge that is not going to share where we are going to attack next in a press conference a week before our brothers and sisters go in.

Exactly. I want to ask the author why you can't run the Pentagon like you run 1st Marine Division.

"Mattis, whose reputation precedes him, built his career on candor, clarity, and pure dedication to his missions..." So why would we (and Trump) expect less out of him as SECDEF? And, more to the point, why is there an air that we shouldn't include retired military officers in presidential administrative positions? He directed arguably the CLEANEST cadre of government during his tenure as CMC. My expectation would be that he'd attempt to do the same with all of DoD.

I don't think that Mad Dog really gives a rat's a$$ about protecting his "legacy".

In all honesty, as a general, he would have already had dealings with politics. I have a feeling that he will put up with a lot less BS than your average person would, and I don't see that as a bad thing.
