When I was in Turkey, 80-81, I became friends with an officer at the Consulate who's job was to go monthly to visit all Americans in Turkish prisons. From his stories the movie is a PG-13 version of life in those prisons.

Thank you, my friend PO3 Phyllis Maynard for posting the video of Billy Hayes revisiting the 1978 movie "Midnight Express."
"being locked in a Turkish prison for smuggling hashish in 1970 and his subsequent escape."
By the way, a close friend of my darling wife went with her church member to tour Israel and Turkey. The woman was originally from Cuba. Once they were in Turkey one of the women stole her passport, etc. She was imprisoned in a Turkish prison for about a week. Her daughter contacted the State Department and she was released from the prison as she was - no changes of clothing, reeking from urination, etc. She was placed on an airplane destined to the USA thoroughly embarrassed.
She never went back to that church.
FYI Maj Marty Hogan this relates to your leadership post.

LTC Stephen F. how horrible for the woman. It is as LTC (Join to see) wrote in a post, the movie was PG considering the real deal.
