The war in Northern Ireland simmered under the surface more than overtly for a long time as the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the Protestant terror groups Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), founded in 1966, and the larger Ulster Defence Association (UDA) TSgt Joe C.
I remember visiting England in the 1980s and there was some tension which matched the tension in Germany with Red Army Faction and conservative German terror groups there. The Cold War was not a time of perpetual peace by any means.
