Also called Prisoners of the Sun when I'd first seen it, an early Russell crowe performance that evidently got him seriously noticed, very understated performance, Bryan Brown is fantastic in my view, and George Takei ("Sulu") gives a very unusual performance quite well done as Japanese VAdm Takahashi, who really was tried as a war criminal for the murder of some 300 Australians possibly ANZACS I'm not sure as well as Dutch buried at Laha airfield aftermor during the now little known battle on the island of Ambon part of Indonesia, fascinating story, the film paraphrases a good deal of the story, not other parts, also, Tetsu Watanabe is positively demonic as the Japanese naval Capt in charge of the POW camp that had been on the island run by the imperial Japanese Navy, one of my very favorite little known ww2 films,z the DVD which I'd gotten of it, also had Russell crowe doing a performance as an extra about his grandfather, in a music video, which, ordinarily, is not to my taste, however it's about one of his gradfathers, decorate by Queen Elizabeth II with I think a DSO I'm not sure which decoration, exactly, fornhismwork as a combat cameraman during ww2 in the Pacific, where he'd evidently witnessed some really serious Japanese atrocities, I'm not sure on Ambon, however, very graphically depicted and very unnerving, yet very necessary history, if you all ever can find the DVD watch that extra, it'll positively take your breath away gasping in horror, honest truly necessary and disturbing ww2 history recounted by Russell Crowe as he explains the story, believe me, fascinating, even if genuinely unsettling, honest....
