Boston - Freedom Trail: Faneuil Hall - Samuel Adams statue

On this day in 1880, the statue of Samuel Adams was dedicated.

The standing bronze portrait staue of Samuel Adams, fronting Faneuil Hall, was designed by sculptor Anne Whitney in 1875, and dedicated in 1880. The statue, a counterpart of one in Washington DC, portrays the Revolutionary patriot, just after demanding that Governor Hutchinson immediately remove the British troops from Boston after the Boston Massacre. It originally stood in Adams Square, which was demolished to build Government Center, and moved to its current location in 1928. The lower base of the pedestal is of unpolished Quincy granite, cut in eight pieces, covering a surface nine feet square. The base surmounting this is of polished Quincy granite, four feet three inches square; the die is three feet square, and the cap surmounting it is three feet eight inches square, both also of polished Quincy granite. The pedestal is ten feet high. The posts at the corners of the base are of granite, two feet eight inches high. The inscriptions on each of the four panels of the pedestal are as follows: 'Samuel Adams 1722-1803 - A Patriot - He organized the Revolution, and signed the Declaration of Independence. Governor - A True Leader of the People. Erected A. D. 1880, from a fund bequeathed to the city of Boston by Jonathan Phillips. A statesman, incorruptible and fearless.'
