Boston "Homes for the Brave"
via Boston Veterans Services:
http://homesforthebrave.boston.gov/ Flanked by veterans, mayors and state leaders committed to ending homelessness among veterans, First Lady Michelle Obama announced the launch of the Mayors Challenge to End Veteran Homelessness at the White House on June 4, 2014. The Challenge seeks to secure commitments from local leaders to end homelessness among veterans by 2015, using evidence-based approaches as outlined in Opening Doors, The Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homeless, and through collaboration with community partners. To date, 76 other Mayors have joined the challenge. Working together, the goal of ending homelessness among veterans nationwide is within reach.
The City of Boston – partnering with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs(VA), Massachusetts Department of Veterans’ Services (DVS), Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development, Boston Housing Authority, and many nonprofit agencies who work with homeless veterans – recently embarked on an effort to house 100 homeless veterans in 100 days. This effort is part of the Federal Plan to End Homelessness among veterans by the end of 2015. The partners have created a registry of the homeless veterans looking for housing and have identified housing resources for many of those veterans. The partners have also pledged to provide each and every veteran with support services to meet their ongoing needs, including stabilization services to maintain their housing after they move in.
Boston is well poised to achieve the goal. Due to City’s leadership, strong collaborations already exist between the City, State, the VA and other community based organizations that serve homeless veterans. The best evidence of this collaboration is that 250 homeless veterans have been housed so far in 2014.
HOMES FOR THE BRAVE: A CALL TO ACTION!
No veteran who has taken an oath to defend our country should be homeless. And yet, many veterans are still living on the streets or in shelters in Boston.
Mayor Martin Walsh has committed to end veteran homelessness in Boston. The Homes for the Brave Initiative, an unprecedented collaboration of government and private agencies, has achieved great success by housing 678 veterans between August 2013 and June 2015.
Help us bring the rest of them home!
