We use to have real hard headed, nail spitting, bad asses for XO's. They would cancel liberty, leave, chow, hot showers, and breaks until moral improved! And, not a moment before!

I think there's a big difference between being hard on your subordinates to train them for being in austere conditions and being downright abusive.
