My paternal grandfather fought in the Gallipoli campaign as a British Army lance corporal TSgt Joe C.. The action described here was an opening engagement in that campaign. In hindsight the idea that a naval engagement would be sufficient to defeat an enemy on their home term was wishful thinking at best.
After the naval assaults failed to achieve the desired results, the assault on the eastern shore of Gallipoli was initiated with commonwealth nations such as Australia providing many soldiers and the British Army using some soldiers including my grandfather - as well [pictured in that campaign].
