British Surrender Fort Sackville to American Militiamen After 2-Day Siege

Today in Military History: February 25, 1779: During the American War for Independence (AWI), many small-scale operations contributed to the final victory of American arms against the British. One of those small victories took place in what was once called the "Northwest Territory." That area encompasses the modern-day states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin, an area of some 260,000 square miles. Operating on the fringes of the American colonial frontier, a force of less than 200 men took daring military actions to secure the Northwest Territory for America. They were commanded by a man not yet 30 years of age, named George Rogers Clark.
