For those who don't know, drafted Korean military service is far different than voluntary US military service.
Regulations are stricter, housing and food is rougher (still using large bays instead of one or two person rooms), there is less career freedom (needs of service for MOS and duty station with almost no say for conscripts), and meager stipend instead of regular pay ($400 monthly for ROK E-1 instead of $1600 US E-1)

South Korea requires all males to serve in the military — here's what it's like
They barely get to visit home for 2 years.

That sounds pretty good. I received about $65 per month to start. Everyone was sent to Infantry or medic training, not much choice. After separating, I put myself through school. Of course that was my choice. I don't think there should be a comparison as to what other countries pay. Its simple choices. If the American army is more attractive, then join up here. But, he isn't obliged to serve here. I guess that's the thing, he either wants to give back to his country or he doesn't.

Read the comment that I just made. ROK military service is far harsher than US military service with less benefit
