Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that on June 27, 1874 twenty-eight buffalo hunters with new high-powered rifles repulsed a much larger force of attacking Comanche, Kiowa, and Cheyenne Indians at an old trading post in the Texas panhandle called Adobe Walls.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm actually using the battle of Adobe Walls as a background for a work of fiction about a young woman from Virginia who goes west after the Civil War.
This was also the second battle fought between Natives and the US. The first battle took place in 1864 when about 300 soldiers under Kit Carson were forced to retreat back to New Mexico after being engaged by about 1300 native warriors.
While casualties were rather light on both sides, Carson was lauded for his decision to disengage and the skill he used to break contact. His men were badly out numbered and running out of ammunition. If he had continued to fight here was a good chance his command would have been overrun and wiped out like Custer was at Little Big Horn.
