WWI profoundly affected everyone, but its effects were most visible in the authors and artists of that time. BTW, Hillsdale College has an free online course covering some of the writings of C S Lewis.

Excellent article, CW5 Jack Cardwell. You may enjoy the 1993 movie “Shadowlands”, if you haven’t already seen it. It’s a “British biographical drama film about the relationship between Irish academic C. S. Lewis and American poet Joy Davidman, her death from cancer, and how this challenged Lewis's Christian faith.”
The movie takes some license, but is fairly accurate otherwise. Anthony Hopkins is excellent as C.S. Lewis.
