I had heard all the stories about Ty Cobb and believed them because... well, they were told by people I "respected". Turns out that I had to learn to be more careful with my respect. Respect is something that's expected of us. We're expected to respect superiors, especially our civilian leaders. It's something we expect from subordinates. So we get it. The problem is keeping it.

Yes, it seems that character assassination of many historical figures is the fad of the day now. I doubt that Ty Cobb was any more or less racist than the average person on the street was in those days. That said, I'd suspect that most people years ago were more racist than folks today. Times change and so do attitudes. That doesn't make historical figures bad people, they are simply a product of their times.
