I would hope that our military would be paying more attention to the service members on the ground that are actually there than what some dude behind a computer is putting out. I would hope that they don't have their collective faces reading this fake news or relying on MSNBC, CNN, FoxNews to give them their information.

SSG Michael Hartsfield - "that if it didn't come from them or the Chain of Command, it's bullshit" - Yes but that is not always true either.

SSG Robert Webster - Better to get it there than some news source that thinks they know. What would do? Go up to the BC or CSM and tell them they are full of shit to their face? You'd be Mr. Webster then.

SSG Michael Hartsfield - I have actually briefed both battalion and brigade commanders and their sergeant majors that the information the they had been passing out in relation to 'news' information was incorrect. AND I did not become Mr. Webster (as you should note, I am US Army Retired, just like you, not just a Veteran).
If you would like, you can peruse my LinkedIn profile and select some for query, there are enough that I am still conversant with to still maintain a modicum of contact with.
That is one thing that S3 and S2 NCOs do at times. I will even name drop on this one - If you are still in the Fayetteville/Fort Bragg area, you could ask CSM(R) Steven England or CSM(R) Charlie Thorpe.
Anyway, most commanders and their reps, especially those in the S2 or equivalent receive a news headline cut sheet almost every single day, you should be quite familiar with it, that is called the 'Early Bird Brief'. Though I have not seen Breitbart News listed as of yet, I have seen 'The Daily Beast' listed, which as far as journalism goes really isn't much different.

Seeing how much of the country and government has been spun up for almost a year about a completely fake news story, AND considering that fake news story has to do with one of the most powerful nations on the planet besides ours, I think it's completely believable that fake news could lead to war.

SSG Michael Hartsfield - Let me put it this way -- the United States right now is in a state of high agitation right now because of a bunch of lies put forth by the left. The situation as it exists right now is 100% their fault. If we end up in a conflict because of it, where we wouldn't have been in a conflict were the left not agitating, then the left will hold the giant share of the blame.

SSgt Christopher Brose - So if we wage a war based on fake news, the right will be absolved of any responsibility?

You don't have to believe either. Breitbart is opinion. As for Waging War based on false information. That is a War Crime, several members of the Bush Administration have been indicted and could be arrested if they travel to the wrong countries. Joachim Von Ribbentrop the Nazi Foreign Minister and some Japanese were hanged for Waging Aggressive Warfare.

SSG Michael Hartsfield - Not absolved, no. To the extent that we end up in a war because of stupidity on the right, to that extent the right will share responsibility. But the left has proven over and over and over again that they will never accept responsibility for bad things that happen as a direct result of their policies and actions, and we are where we are right now because of leftist stupidity.

Fake news led us into war with Spain, and lazy reporting of lies got us into Vietnam.

1stSgt Nelson Kerr - Really? It was written about American barbarity specifically? Please do tell, where did you derive that conclusion from? Yes, it is anti-war and written during the 'final' days of the Philippine-American War, but how does any of Twain's commentary about it directly relate to what happened in 'that' portion of the war?

SSG Robert Webster - The said that it was about that war, and the mass murder of innocent civilians is referring to out action in that war. We were both incredibly savage there and completely and murderously in the wrong.
Have you read the history of ours action in that war or even about the The Balangiga Massacre. We lied to them, we stole there land, them we murderer and tutored the in large numbers in a fight we started.
The poem fits perfectly

1stSgt Nelson Kerr - First, I have probably studied more about the Philippines than most. And I know a considerable bit about the various conflicts and some of the root causes.
Did we lie to them - probably but not in the way that you are insinuating.
Did we steal their land - yes, some but not like most if not all colonial powers. By this statement you are informing me that you really do not know much about the history of the Philippines.
That we (Americans) murder and tortured Filipinos' of all stripes in large numbers - that is an area of speculation on your part and wherever you obtained the 'information.' You definitely need to broaden your study materials to include from Spanish and Filipino sources, and additional American sources. I can create a bibliography for you if you need assistance.

We stole whole Damned country. And killed those that objected in a brutal war that we started. We said we were coming to rescue them and after they helped us we they found out they had traded one oppressor forr another.
