I cannot view the article from this computer but will do so later. So if I am off base of the article that is my excuse.
I do not understand why we celebrate him. Columbus was a cruel taskmaster on the voyage (somewhat understood) but also to the island people he "discovered."

Interesting. Almost verbatim from my old 6th grade history book. He omits to mention the object of this mission was for wealth. Columbus did not gain much of that. However, he was not a hero. When a person is doing something strictly for profit, that is not heroics. Also, the author skims over the treatment his men received from their commander, both during the trip and after. Not very heroic.
From the article:
"we celebrate the arrival of Western Civilization to the Western Hemisphere"
Not so sure we did anyone a favor.

CPT Jack Durish - Actually, I majored in world history. As to what "we" did to the Western Hemisphere, I was simply voicing my view, based on what was done to the original inhabitants of Turtle Island.
