When I was down there for ODF, they took us on a tour of Ross' hut, a New Zealander and his team who were early Antarctic explorers (100 years ago; 2nd to make the Pole, but died coming back). There was a seal they had killed for meat that was still not decomposed, oil from its blubber still good, and their rations (and the food for their dogs) were still edible-ish. Antarctica is a desert, and its a cold desert. You know, like a freezer is. So yeah, I totally can see this. On a humorous note, aren't all fruit cakes "almost edible"?
