Maj Marty Hogan I remember this man from my college history classes. Took a stand against slavery and made a difference.

I believe his side erred with the hard peace demanded from the South. We in the United States are all brothers & sisters and should act with fealty for this country. The forces that held down the Black citizens are just as nefarious, just as illegitimate as any radical group ever could be. I view personally that President Lincoln's policy of a soft peace for the South was correct but I believe all people who are citizens must retain the full right of citizenship. Discrimination over skin color denies the biblical truth that God created all men with honor & worth that must be respected.

Charles Sumner had things wrong as a proponent of a hard peace for the old slave states for he forgets that the sting of slavery had been a Northern problem for many decades. He did serve the United States for his entire life and for that he deserves respect & honor.

Thanks Maj Marty Hogan for letting us know that January 6 is the anniversary of the birth of American politician and United States Senator from Massachusetts Charles Sumner.
He is perhaps most famous for being caned in 1856 by South Carolina Congressman, Democrat Preston Brooks, who nearly killed Sumner on the Senate floor two days after Sumner delivered an intensely anti-slavery speech called "The Crime Against Kansas.
Rest in peace Charles Sumner!
