"You don't need a gun. This isn't the "Wild, wild West". We have police to protect you. Just dial 911 and let the professionals handle the situation."

My wife and I were outraged at the Seidle shooting in Asbury Park, NJ. A local police Sgt. chased down his estranged wife in his car, causing her to crash. He then shot her in the presence of other officers investigating a nearby accident, who did nothing to stop him.
He then put the gun to his head, beginning a stand off with those police present and several more who arrived on the scene in response.
At some point in the stand off, he took the gun from his head and fired four (4) times more at his wife -- deliberate, aimed shots indicated by the interval between shots on video of the incident. Again, no police action to stop him from shooting his wife.
The stand off continued until the police finally convinced him to put down the gun. After this long delay, his wife was finally taken to the hospital. She was still alive on arrival, in spite of all her wounds and the delay in treatment. She died soon after.
The state AG guidelines concerning "use of deadly force" by police listed all sorts of conditions when this was "justifiable", but there was absolutely no requirement for any police officer to "use deadly force" to save innocent life under any circumstances.
They had no such obligation to protect that victim.
