CPT Jack Durish Interesting article. I can agree with PFC Lisa McDonald, the winters, specifically the windshield factor in Chicago can be harsh. A comment from someone who has crunched numbers and grew up in the south suburbs of Chicago. Statistics and surveys can be interpreted in several ways. All major cities have their positive and negative factors. I may be biased, but Chicago will always be a great city and a great place to visit. The individuals moving - the survey does not state any demographics. Where they there for temporary employment, assignment completed and now returning home? Are they students? High School grads and moving on to college? College grads and returning home or moving on to a new job? Maybe their "Snow Birds". I have a friend who is a traveling RN. She works in the Chicago area during the summers and Florida during the winters. Are they Senior Citizens or Retirees, relocating to be closer to Family, their children, or grandchildren? Illinois does have some decent military benefits - does not tax military pay, has the Veterans Scholarship grant, and other military friendly benefits. Just saying, statistics or surveys without additional supportive facts/information are opinions. Capt Dwayne Conyers LTC Stephen C.

What’s Driving Population Declines in More States?
More states lost population last year than in 30 years. Some of the loss can be attributed to national demographic trends — but not all of it.

Illinois doesn't tax military pay? Washington, Texas, Florida, and others don't tax any pay at all. The winters have always been crappy there, but people haven't been leaving in droves before recently. What's the difference? Crime problems in Chicago with no end in sight due to crappy political leadership, and high taxes with no end in sight due to the humungous debt. People who are smart would get the hell out of there while they can still get a decent price for their homes. The dumb and the unfortunate will be stuck there.

People can get used to anything, and if that's home, then it's home. Not for me, though.
