Major, please don't take this the wrong way but I have an opinion I feel the need to state.
I honestly don't see the point in wasting..yes wasting.. billions of dollars or yen for that matter, developing more exotic fighter aircraft. I will not say that air to air combat is dead however, it seems that it is the missiles that do all the work these days. When we can design air to air weapons that can blow an enemy fighter out of the air at 4000mph from 20 miles away then why bother?
Visual dogfighting.... does that even happen anymore between fighter aircraft? Certainly we need to be able to act against transports and tankers as well as tactical bombers but we can already do this.
Developments in missiles are always welcome. It has gotten to the point IMHO that the return is scarcely worth the investment. We can put squadrons of damn near invisible drones armed with missiles anywhere we want in short order. Drones are a dime a dozen by comparison. Any enemy fighter force is going to have to evade an overwhelming minefield of completely expendable flying missiles platforms to get anywhere near their objective. It is a monetary pissing contest anymore which brings few practical returns.
My opinion.

PO3 John Wagner - free passage doctrine of the sea and now you have Vietnam, the Philippines, Japan and other countries coming to us kissing ass for our protection. Can you imagine Vietnam is inviting us back to cam ranh Bay?

1stLt Nick S - Maybe, and there will never be a reason to not have fighter aircraft. However, I still think that drone squadrons will undoubtedly be the future mine fields of the sky..

Trump is 1000% right. Fix what we have. No Billions blown on R&D there... for aircraft that are obsolete before they go into production. We have pretty much completely reached. ..and surpassed the ability of humans to withstand the G forces present in fighter aircraft. If I am not mistaken a fighter pilot is minted with an expiration date are they not? The toll on the body from high speed manoeuvering is a known quantity. The long term results are always the same.
