What was the significance of being the first to break the barrier? No guarantee of what will happen! When the first automobiles hit the road, some predicted instant death if the body exceeded 30 mph. In Yeager's case, would the aircraft be controllable or instantly break up due to the stress on he airframe? All aviators must trust the engineers knew what they were doing when they designed the aircraft; it takes a lot of trust when you're doing something that has never been done before. It brings to mind John Glenn's statement that his thought when he was about to be shot into space was that he was on a machine that was built with parts from the lowest bidders.

Very true, LtCol Robert Quinter. I always chuckle when I hear a commercial say, "military grade."

Thank you my friend SSG Jeffrey Leake for making us aware that Chuck Yeager was the First Person to Break the Sound Barrier.
