Cadet Moody...good question. There are no LT 38A (Civil Affairs) positions. CPT is the lowest 38A position (Team Leader is a majority of those positions). Officers that want to become Civil Affairs serve in their basic branch as a LT and then submit a packet as a 1LT when the MILPER message is released from HRC for the ARSOF board on the active duty side.

The first question should be active duty or Reserves? For AD that is correct. For the Reserves, you may, I say again, MAY be able to join a USAR CA unit, but you would still have to serve your LT time in your assigned basic branch before getting a school slot. This was the case pre- 9/11. The Reserves may be more constrained now.

I believe some applications are being accepted. USAR NCOs are usually required to attend the current pipeline course for some updated training, language and additional SOF skills. ARSOF NCOs have a great future both near and far term.
