Hello, my name is Sean Honea. I first became interested in Chinese Medicine in response to my own health concerns. I served in the U.S. Army for most of my twenties (1997-2005), and often turned to long distance running and eating to relieve stress. It was a bit of a vicious cycle. In the years after leaving the service, I found I could no longer exercise the stress away. I gained about 50 pounds during this period, sprained my ankles on numerous occasions, experienced fatigue, brain fog, and eventually developed repetitive stress injuries in both wrists. I tried physical therapy and a vegetarian, and then vegan diet with little improvement.
I received my first acupuncture treatment at the Berkeley Acupuncture Project (BAP) in 2009. Initially somewhat hesitant about the needles, my anxiety melted away as I felt I was floating above the chair. I thought, “So this is acupuncture, I can do this.”
Soon afterwards, I enrolled in Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine College in Berkeley and recieved weekly treatments at discounted rates in the student clinic. Through these treaments and my studies my health improved dramatically. I lost the weight, my wrists healed and my mind cleared. During this time I met and married my wife and fellow student, Erica. We now have a beautiful and healthly child added to our family.
In 2015, Erica and I graduated. We are now planning to open Honea Family Acupuncture, a health and wellness center, in Richmond, Virginia. Help us take the next step in 2016!
In order to make our services more affordable, we plan to accept health insurance for all major health insurance providers including the Veteran Adminstration and contract with Managed Care and Discount Medical plan networks for the under and uninsured.
