Asking $1000 is a bit high considering there are tens of thousands 1911's out there. Even a good condition model is still a junk shooter compared to a modern 1911 with all the latest upgrades. I may have to rethink my purchase.

SMSgt Thor Merich - If you are buying it as a shooter I think you will be disappointed and pay too much. They are being sold for their collector value. And while there may be tens of thousands of them out their CMP knows they will run out eventually so why sell them all cheap real fast. Make them last and keep the income flowing. There won't be a whole lot more for them to sell after this they are running out of M1's and won't be allowed to sell M14's and M16's because they are full auto capable. Although they could very easily get M-16's replace the lower and trigger parts and sell them as semi auto's.

SSG Tom Pike - You are right SSG. I guess my problem is that I shoot all the guns I own, with the exception of a rifle built in 1895 (but I keep it in shootable condition). I own a WWII M-1 Carbine that is a wonderful shooter. Very accurate and fun to shoot, ammo is cheap.
I bought the Carbine in the mid 1980's for $200. I should have bought a Garand at the same time as a bunch of Carbines and Garands had flooded the market as they were guns returned under to the US under the MAP program.
This program may be better suited for collectors instead of shooters. But I thought the CMP was all about shooting?

So yes CMP is about shooting and marksmanship. But they realize that there is collectors appeal for the forearms they have, and they know there is a very finite am out of guns they will be able to sell. Those guns are their only source of income. Once they are gone the only thing they will have left is the trust fund they have built up from selling the guns.

Its interesting that the price is so high. I always thought the CMP was about shooting and not collecting. Asking $1000 per gun is clearly geared towards collectors, not the average joe.
