So the only thing that could save the world from an unmonitored asteroid is the US Federal Government?

If its the asteroid I read about a week or so ago. It wont impact earth at all. Scientists were noting that if it did it would have a great potential for massive damage, However, in this lifetime they don't have the technology to even deal with it before it were to impact. \
