Technology giveth, and taketh away. Robert Murray, a coal boss and founder of Murray Energy, had tough words for Trump, telling The Guardian that the president should scale back his promises about bringing coal jobs back to the industry.
“I suggested that he temper his expectations. Those are my exact words,” Murray told the newspaper. “He can’t bring them back.”
According to Murray, the majority of job losses among miners has come as a result of technology and automation, rather than stifling regulations .

I was listening the other day to NPR and they discussed this issue. There was several comments made by a few different people to the effect that there are roughly 4 times as many people employed in the renewable energy sector compared to the coal sector and renewable energy is a growing high tech industry. They also made the same comments as Mr. Murray that it would be tough to bring coal jobs back or develop new coal jobs. The bottom line from many was that it did not make sense to work to try to bring back coal jobs at the expense of renewable energy sector jobs. Rather interesting discussion. I hope the idea of bringing back coal jobs is just a campaign promise and not a something that will be actively pursued.
