Thanks TSgt Joe C. for letting us know that on February 1, 2003 the during the Columbia‘s 28th space mission, designated STS-107, the space shuttle Columbia broke up while entering the atmosphere over Texas, killing all seven crew members on board.

On February 1st, 2003, the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated during its re-entry into the atmosphere. The seven astronauts were killed.

Sad situation. I was at the NCO Academy when this happened. We had teams out searching for components across the south. Scattered it a long ways.
