A more current comparison would be AK-74 and M4 Carbine.

Opposite strengths and weaknesses...M16 is lighter and more accurate while AK47 is more durable and rugged. It is almost like comparing rapier to broadsword

I like the M16s upgraded (M4) descendants, but then the AK-47 has its own lineage.
