This is a direct result of a lazy Congress not doing their job. After 15 years of combat operations, the longest such operations in our history, we are now faced with a new and growing problem. The "clerical error" that has already impact almost 10,000 National Guardsmen out of California looks to be just the tip of the iceberg. These Service Members did nothing wrong, yet are being forced to come up with thousands of dollars to pay back a bonus they received as a result of a two way contract with the government. These men and women, our brothers and sisters-in-arms, stood up to answer the call to serve this country during some of the worse times for the military. They agreed to serve X amount of years and in return accepted a payment of X dollars from the government. Now the government wants the money back but there is no way to give those years back to the service member. Congress needs to step up, forget which side of the room they sit on and stop this mess ASAP and return all the money from those service members that already paid back the bonus they earned.

SGT Ben Keen The only thing I would add is that they should also receive, from congress, a written apology for the emotional stress that has been incurred because of this debacle. As for your commentary: SPOT ON!

PO3 Steven Sherrill - That's a great addition! I heard that there is more to the what is going on as far as some of the money that the Pentagon is going after is not the contractile bonus but other money given to the service member. Now, if the Service Members knew they were getting over paid, the story may change but either way, the impact of this will be felt for years to come and will greatly impact the recruiting efforts of the military.
