The Missouri Compromise. My favorite example of the folly of compromise. Abandon your principles and go along with whatever cockamamie idea the opposition wants or they call you an "Obstructionist".
Please, anything but "Obstructionist"!

One of the impacts of slavery in this nation after England outlawed slavery was that slaveholders and the states were they sway did their best to ensure they could maintain their way of life.
The Missouri Compromise was a victory for slaveholders because it ensured that the status quo of balance between slave holding states and the others had to be maintained.
We have seen a different calculus last century where there was resistance to allowing Washington, DC to become a state in part because it is a very liberal city which leans heavily democratic.
The democrats were the slave holding supporters in the early to mid-19th century.
