And this most clearly makes the argument against Flags of Convenience, SN Greg Wright . MAERSK KENSINGTON - A US flagged vessel maintained to USCG prescribed standards manned by a crew trained to the same level handles a fire aboard with no loss of life. MAERSK HONAM - A Singapore flagged vessel at least three souls lost. The ensuing investigations will find many faults and people will be held accountable, but the real solution lies in tighter restrictions against using Flags of Convenience to save shipping lines money.

Couldn't have said it better. Companies pay foreign crews a fraction of what US sailors make, and the training standards are much lower. The Honam catastrophe will cost Maersk, at a guess, at least half a billion when it's all said and done. Gotta wonder if that averages out over time to result in savings vs US-flagged crews. Which, in and of itself, is a fucked up way of thinking about it.
