I have a prediction. In the next decade or so, one of two things are going to happen regarding our combat arms branches... they're either going to shrink in size dramatically while possessing a high level of performance and skill... or they're going to increase in size with a dramatic reduction in performance level and skill. (I'll give you a hint... that's about the safest bet one could make other than predicting the time on a clock twice a day).
Our current modus operandi is Special Operations combined with precision munitions. That means manning is more akin to fielding NFL-level athletes and NASA-worthy techs as opposed to putting massive numbers of 18-23 year olds in the field supported by generalists. These people come with an expiration date, either from physical limitations or the attraction of competitive fields in the civilian world. If we ever have to fight another "conventional" ground war... we may have to revisit this strategy.
