Have got to love the passive aggressive legal system in Italy. Event 2012. Manslaighter conviction 2015. No...really convicted...validation 2017. I wonder if he had just stayed on board and tried to do anything to help whether he would have stood trial for anything, being satisfied with taking his ticket via maritime channels, ensuring he'd never go to sea again. That tongue lashing he takes from the Coast Guard over an open radio net was epic.

Some of the charges would have been dropped (abandoning early), but he still operated unsafely (and derelict-ly) by going so close to that island, so either way, he was always going to go to jail.
