LTC Stephen C. while I was the Armorer I was able to carry other than my assigned weapon. Sometimes I carried the M9, now and then I carried the M3, and to keep the commander happy,I'd carry the M16 assigned to me.

Did a tour in Germany 1978-1980 at Gelnhausen (2d Bn, 48th INF) and we had four M3s in our arms room for the Mechanics. Three were M3A1s and one was the older M3 model. Very compact compared to the M16A1s we had at the time.

When I did PSD for USAREUR CG's in 2009-12, we carried MP5s. They "look cool" but it's a stupid weapon system to be honest. They have a rainbow trajectory, their terminal ballistics are garbage, and they can't penetrate even soft (IIIA) body armor.
Unless you need to conceal it or fire it from a vehicle, a rifle caliber carbine is better in every way.
But hey, it's just taxpayer dollars, right?

Andrew the SF guys are not a good guide for weapons. The normal SF BN has a lot more weapons than people, all different kinds.
I am not some badass door kicker but I know a few. From my brief experience I personal love the way mp5's shoot, they are smooth as silk. However for versatility I am a huge M4 fan. Not unlike the H&K's they can be outfitted with all kind of optics, lights, etc... My opinion which means nothing, a joe would not get any kind of sub gun without mastering his primary issue weapon. If a SM is issued a sub gun he/she would spend every extra second on the range. They would be very dangerous

At the SF weapons course (summer 1970), we trained on virtually every submachine gun, foreign and domestic, current and obsolete, that the Army could obtain.

Lasted eight weeks (I think), SGT David A. 'Cowboy' Groth. Light and heavy weapons (up to the 4.2 inch mortar and the 105 mm howitzer), and as far as I’m concerned, it should have lasted longer.
