The Doolittle raid actually did little real damage to Japan but it rendered a giant harvest of resolve for American morale. A bombing offensive over Japan did not become operational until the end of 1944 with the capture of atolls (Saipan, Tinian, Guam) from which to base the bombers from for duty. The air offensive led by Gen. Lemay turned Japan into rubble.
