Rajeshwari Devi, 58, died on Sunday after waiting for two days to get uninterrupted oxygen, an ambulance and a bed in a Covid-19 hospital.
She kept waiting and gasping but it was too late by the time help arrived. She was taken to a hospital emergency room on 16 April after her oxygen saturation level dropped. Her CT scan showed that she had developed chronic pneumonia.
But without her Covid report the hospital refused to admit her. She spent around 36 hours in the emergency room on oxygen support in the northern Indian district of Robertsganj. The staff there told her family they were running out of oxygen and she needed to be moved to a bigger hospital but there was no ambulance or any promise of a bed.
The desperate family took her in their car to a hospital where a bed had become available after the intervention of a politician. She had no oxygen support in the car - she died minutes before she could be admitted to hospital.

A total mess Ma'am. After Lockdown in 2020, India became relaxed with cautionary measures, to include weaking masks in public, exercising social distancing and sanitation on regular basis. Politicians gathered large crowds that stretched for miles during roadshows in political battle states, where cautionary measures were completely alien. The Kumbh Mela was allowed without limitations or cautionary measures. Public places were reopened without limitations to assure cautionary measures. The virus mutated into a 'Double Mutant' and struck when all shields were down. The result is a spike in infections and infection-related deaths. The hospitals were flooded with people laying on floors due to shortage of beds. Oxygen in medical treatment facilities ran down to bare bones too. Vaccines were in shortage as well. The second wave hit India when the people and the system were both asleep, it would seem. Again, caught off-guard the Gov't had to scramble and turn hotels into COVID-19 wards in the National Capital. The PM had to have a heart-to-heart with leaders of the Serum Institute and BioTech Lab to increase the vaccine supply, but this time the Central Government will not fit the bill; the states will have to dish out funds to support vaccination programs. How this will work remains to be seen. This is a logistical challenge.

After India suffered a brutal first wave of the wrath of this Coronavirus, Gov't was caught on the back foot not having a clue on how to tackle the onslaught of the Pandemic. The only logical thought that suited the Gov't was to Lockdown the Country and snap the spread. However, after locking the Nation down for three months in continuous succession, the chain of infections was severed and life slowly returned to normal. However, the virus was still lurking around and mutating. The second wave was right around the corner.
As India returned to some state of normalcy, people began taking a more relaxed approach to life, not concerned about even the possibility of a second wave. People stopped wearing masks and many began group meetings without social distancing. The hand sanitizer was nowhere to be found; if you care then, carry your own sanitizer with you. Politicians began massive campaigning in Bengal and Assam. For miles people stood shoulder to shoulder without any sense of social distancing or the urgency to wear masks. There was the Kumbh Mela where people took dips and swam in the river, minus social distancing and masks or sanitation. The Gov't didn't object to the Mela because it is a Hindu festival that is celebrated once every 12 years. Parents took their kids to swimming pools in the National Capital from the outskirts, in a city that has been besieged by the virus in the past. The Coronavirus was waiting for the most opportune time to strike.
When the fear of the Pandemic striking again was practically forgotten and 2020 was in past the rearview mirror, the virus struck again with a massive explosion using a 'Double Mutant' mutation. As the infections began to rise, the number of beds started to shrink and Gov't was at a loss again. Some states chose night curfews and other more seriously affected states went into a full lockdown again. Vaccines ran short and now, hospitals and medical treatment facilities might have to delay the second dose of vaccinations, which can be dangerous. The number of infected people shot straight up and the deaths due to infection spiked. The machinery was unable to cope and has practically broken down.
