Passing this along because it's the first time I've seen instructions for veterans who don't get healthcare through the VA. Hope it helps someone.

Thank you my friend Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen for posting the optimistic perspective. I asked about this at the VAMC emergency room on Sunday.
As most to-down decisions progress availability trumps everything else. I expect we will be able to inoculated by mid-summer. [those at greatest risk should be inoculated earlier.] Since I am adult onset diabetes, mitral-valve disease, clinically depressed, I am not at the top of the pecking order for a dose yet. I hope to get the Johnson & Johnson single dose.
[Update} I learned that at my primary VAMC [Martinsburg, VAMC] veterans 55 and older are eligible to be vacccinated
Who can now get a COVID-19 vaccine at VA
We continue to offer COVID-19 vaccines as quickly and safely as we can. We still have a limited amount of vaccines. So, we continue to follow our phased plan based on VA and CDC COVID-19 risk criteria. Our goal is always to do the most good for the most people.
At this time, we can only offer COVID-19 vaccines to these 2 groups when the Veteran is eligible based on VA and CDC risk criteria:
Veterans who currently receive care through VA, and
Designated primary and secondary family caregivers who are enrolled in our Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC)
Update on the new VA vaccine law
Congress has passed a new law that allows us to offer COVID-19 vaccines to more Veterans and some spouses and caregivers of Veterans.
At this time, we still have a limited amount of vaccines. We’re working to determine how quickly we can begin to offer vaccines to these other groups.
Please check back often for updates. We appreciate your patience as we prepare to offer more vaccines. If you’d like to get regular updates about COVID-19 vaccines at VA, sign up to stay informed.
Note: Your employer, pharmacy, or local public health officials may offer you a COVID-19 vaccine. We encourage you to take the first opportunity you have to get a vaccine at the most convenient location for you.

I wasn't old enough to be eligible through the Military Healthcare System, still aren't as far as I know, but wife got hers through the County and I got mine through the State. With all the latest news about lowering eligibility age you should look to Federal, State and County vaccination sites in addition to waiting for VA.

I just logged into myhealthevet to request medication refills my friend Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen There was a secure message indicating the VAMC is making immunizations available to veterans 55 and older [at that facility - Martinsburg]. I sent a message to that group asking for an appointment. I asked if my wife is eligible.
If not we will schedule one through Tricare or at Fort Belvoir.
