I have mixed feelings about this. If this were to be a nationwide alert system for people missing and thought to be suicidal, why tie it to veterans only? Seems to me a nonveteran in the same situation would deserve the same attention. This may just reinforce the stereotype of veterans, especially those with PTSD as people who are dangerous and to be avoided. On another note, of the 22 suicides a day, do many acutally go missing first, or do they just take their lives? I'm not knocking the feeling behind this, but I do wonder about the actual utility of it for veterans, and the stigma it could put on all veterans. And how does anyone make the case that this should only apply to suicidal veterans and not nonvets? 22 vet suicides a day is a terrible statistic. But there are around 115 suicides a day in the US. I think if people want a suicide watch alert, it should be for everyone.
