What is disturbing is Canada was the major source of oil in the US Northeast and cutting off the effective transport via pipe to the US makes no sense at all. Once an oil pipeline is in it pretty hard to tell it is even there. hey are very well hidden and the land returned to its original appearance as the pipe are well underground. when through woodland they continue to be woodlands and except for occasional surface pipe that poke out at long intervals there isn't any sign of the pipelines. They move a lot of oil much more quickly than a truck or train is able.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - I think the recent disaster here in Massachusetts with a gas pipeline bears out what You said, of course also why I mentioned constant regulation and I guess I should add oversight of these companies by other agencies to insure compliance and proper maintenance. You make a good point on that subject. I do know that there are Gas companies here that have done a good job but the latest problem, I've never even heard of the company and its apparent they needed watching. the local companies were fine, that one moved in from another state and replaced smaller local companies.

SMSgt Lawrence McCarter Yes unfortunately there will always be bottom rung operators who put profits above safety, and also unfortunately we currently have an administration that is tearing apart oversight and constant regulation, big mistake IMHO.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - Its always a mistake to take oversight and regulation out of the picture especially when safety is a major issue. There is a such thing as over regulation also but some safeguards need to be in place as industry does a very poor job of compliance on their own initiative.

Even though I can't prove it at this time, I'm wondering if Greenpeace and other answer to stopping the pipelines coming West in towards the Pacific or South to the US are being influenced by Russia and OPEC funding dissident groups to stop oil from being shipped in large quantities at any cost.

Something to wonder about, its possible I suppose but I don't know, even if people there are trying to do what they think is the right thing it doesn't mean someone else can't sell them a bill of goods. Is that the case ? I don't know but it seems like a valid question.

The billion-dollar pipeline Canada can't build
Canada bought the pipeline despite fierce opposition to a project that would triple its capacity.

How soon we forget. In 2015 the Republicans were at the starting gate to outdo each other, remember the size of those first few Republican debates? Anyone who has seen petroleum facilities in the parts of the world you mention quickly can see the impact of no environmental stewardship. I'm no liberal by any stretch, but I do believe we owe it to our grandkids grandkids to preserve the environment and maintain an industraliazed lifestyle, no matter the costs.
