Crossing the Rural/Urban Divide

This discussion is very troubling to me. I am an old school American, an individual who always prided himself on being self-sufficient. I spent most of my working life self-employed and a home owner. As I listened to this discussion, I couldn't help comparing it to the biblical story of Moses leading the Jews from Egypt to the Promised Land, a trek of 40 years. Why, you may wonder, did it take that long when a gimp could walk that distance in a couple of weeks. Well, one theory has it that the Jews couldn't build a free nation with people who were born and lived in slavery. Moses and the other leaders led them in circles until a new generation was born in freedom. Here we have a majority of Americans living in homes provided by landlords. They turn to Washington for the solution to every problem. Whenever anything bad happens, they demand that "someone do something" rather than doing something themselves. We no longer teach our children the relations ship between rights and responsibility. The parallels between welfare and slavery are too stark to ignore. Are we now a people who simply can't live as free men and women and are now willing to surrender our freedom in exchange for someone to take responsibility for us?
