Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that on April 20, 1902 Marie and Pierre Curie successfully isolated radioactive radium salts from the mineral pitchblende in their laboratory in Paris.
Sadly these pioneers who did so much for radiology suffered much. Madame Marie Curie died of from leukemia caused by four decades of exposure to radioactive substances in 1934 the year before her daughter Irene Curie and son-In-law Frederic Joliot was awarded the Nobel prize in chemistry for the discovery of artificial radioactivity.
