The Spitfire, the Mustang, and the Corsair have long dominated the attention of those of us who study history, especially the history of WWII. They were handsome planes with spirited performance. Thus I was intrigued to find the chronicle of the P-40. Not a work of art and certainly not an agile fighter. The P-40 went to battle like a bare knuckle fighter, taking its licks and delivering its own toe-to-toe with its adversaries. Apparently, superior armor and armament can compensate for a lack of speed and agility.
