However they are based in a country with data retention laws which defeats a lot of purposes.

Yes. Iceland has a 6 month data retention law although a bill is being pushed to remove that apparently. But if you're only using a VPN to masquerade your IP for security and encrypting data in transit on public Wi-Fi it works fine. I will never advocate VPN use for illegal purposes.

The data retention laws in Iceland do NOT apply to a VPN service, they only apply to ISP's
Iceland is widely regarded as one of the best countries for a VPN to be based.
We are not obligated to retain any connection logs at all
