Thanks TSgt Joe C. for letting us know that on February 7, 1891 Bob, Emmett, and Grat Dalton staged an unsuccessful train robbery near Alila, California–an inauspicious beginning to their careers as serious criminals.
"The Dalton Gang, former lawmen turned train robbers, were on the lam with a $15,000 bounty on their heads when greed got the best of them. On October 5, 1892, the brazen gang attempted to rob two banks at the same time. The townspeople of Coffeyville, Kansas, banded together and thwarted the robbery."

TSgt Joe C. We live pretty close to the museum in Coffeyville Kansas where the Dalton Gang tried to rob two banks at one time. They were wearing beards but one of the townspeople recognized one of the Dalton's and the townspeople took up guns and they were waiting for them outside the bank.

Bob Dalton, Grat Dalton and Bill Powers are buried in the same plot. For years, their graves were marked with only the metal pipe which was the hitching post to which they tied their horses on the day they died. Today the graves of three Dalton gang members are marked with a stone purchased years later by their brother Emmett.

Emmett was the sole survivor that day.
