Day 3: Navy conducts first live-fire torpedo drill in 13 years

This was the third day of the 36th Han Kuang exercises. In a large-scale live-fire drill, the Army, Navy and Air Force defended against a simulated Chinese attack on Pingtung''s Jiupeng Base.

The live-fire ground operations involved Patriot missiles as well as the Hsiung Feng and Tien Kung missile systems. For the first time in 13 years, the Navy ran a live torpedo drill, firing an SUT heavyweight torpedo from a submarine. President Tsai Ing-wen was on-site to inspect the drill as commander-in-chief of the armed forces. The annual Han Kuang exercises opened Monday and will conclude on Friday. It will be followed by a round of computer-simulated war games in September.
