PO3 (Join to see) I have read some about this in agriculture publications. I have discussed this with some foresters I know and they agree, most of this was preventable.

This was a topic a couple weeks ago with one of the old veterans I visit. He said that the farmers used to get together and burn off the undergrowth here in the Ozarks around Easter time and that helped prevent wild fires later in the dry season, made it so you could walk in the woods easier and killed off the Ticks. Sounded like they were doing controlled burns and his reasoning makes sense.

CSM Richard StCyr - exactly, I was at FT Benning several years ago, they were doing a controlled burn to take care of the underbrush and prevent the wildfire problems.

LTC (Join to see) - That's where I first encountered controlled burns, when I was in the 43rd Engineers we used to get taskers to support the Ft Benning Fire Dept and DPW cutting fire breaks with the dozers, and we line guys would get Indian pumps to knock down embers and contain the fire to the range areas. Small world.

The Forest service needs to implement a plan on elimanating a lot of the underbrush.
