When I was a section leader on the USS Blue Ridge in the early 70's, two of the calibration techs I supervised invited me to go hear a local Okinawa band - Nichigihara or something like that. The bar was long and narrow with the bar itself running two-thirds down one side and tiered bleacher seats (maybe four rows) down the opposite side. The band played all Deep Purple hits --- at the end of the night we left to take a cab back to White Beach where the ship was moored. It took the better part of an hour before I was able to hear again---the music was that loud at maybe ten feet from the stage speakers. I later heard that the band had gone on tour in Tokyo a few weeks after the real Deep Purple band had and drew even bigger crowds.
