PO3 Steven Sherrill I wonder if they are hesitant to just evacuate and leave a void, like in Iraq. The rise of ISIS, I think, put a bit of a hitch in our step on just picking up and leaving. I agree, though, we need to get the hell out of there. It is a quagmire that only they can fix. We simply need to focus on securing ourselves & our allies. We don't need to go into anyone else's borders at this time.

SSgt (Join to see) There is a huge difference between Iraq and Afghanistan. No matter how wicked Saddam Hussein was, he ruled that country with an iron fist. They had a strong centralized government. Everyone knew who was in charge, and the consequences of being on his bad side. When he was overthrown there was a power vacuum that allowed ISIS to thrive. Afghanistan is a tribal society. They are less devoted to a centralized government, and more likely to rely on the tribal government. The vacuum that would be left would be mitigated by the tribal nature of the culture. So maybe removing the U.S. from the equation would go a long way to ending the quagmire. I definitely agree that we need to be focusing on our domestic problems as opposed to sending resources overseas.

PO3 Steven Sherrill - I think it would be a different type of vacuum. Not as powerful as the one in Iraq, but tribal leaders would be easier to take out than a strong centralized, well guarded leader.
I agree. We have issues here that need to be focused on. Perhaps the engineers could be utilized here to fix our standing issues, instead of building up another country's infrastructure. I think we're all just tired of one step forward, and 2 steps back.
