This is no different from Operation Fast & Furious. The Democrats do not like a law so they fabricate a story and let the press push it on the people. That was guns and now they have moved on to using humans. Flood the zone, create havoc, then say the government must fix this.

The better question is why do they do it.
What do they stand to gain?
Not voters, at least not for a long time.
Financially? That leads to some interesting questions.
But my guess is that it is a direct assault on Trump politically. Trying to put the lie to his chief campaign promise. With Democrats, the chief motivator is nearly always power.

They are replacing their voting base with a new one that needs government support.

They want to raise numbers prior to census. It won't mean more viters, but it WILL mean a larger share of fed money and, more importantly, more seats in Congress. This is why they so vehemently oppose the citizenship question. They will lose Congressional seats if we apportion representatives based on citizens rather than residents.
